Ajax Bomb Girls Legacy Committee receives $232,000 for monument to honour women war worker

Ajax Council, MP Mark Holland and members of the Ajax Bomb Girls Legacy Committee hosted a special funding announcement for the first ever public art piece to honour the hundreds of thousands of Canadian women war workers, including those who worked at Defence Industries Limited (DIL).

MP Mark Holland announced a grant from the Ministry of Canadian Heritage, through the Building Communities – Arts and Heritage Program announced a grant in the amount of $232,000 towards the memorial project, bringing the total funds raised for the project to approximately $500,000.


Messier-Dowty donates $12,500 to Ajax Bomb Girls Legacy campaign

Messier-Dowty Inc.’s generous sponsorship at the DIL Legacy Sponsorship Level ($12,500) was acknowledged at the Special Movie Screening of the Global Bomb Girls, at St. Francis Centre, Ajax, March 28th 2014.

bomb-girls-sailabration-1July 6th and 7th – Guests were thrilled that cast from the hit Global BOMB GIRLS series joined the Ajax Bomb Girls Legacy Campaign’s “Sail-a-bration – Shore Leave” dinner/dance at the Jubilee Pavilion on July 6th Charlotte Hegele, (Kate), Carlyn Burchell, (Carol), Lisa Norton (Edith) and Gabe Grey, (Dr. Patel) joined in the fun, showing their support of the campaign to commission a monument to those who worked at Defence Industries Limited, the largest munitions plant in the Commonwealth, and all women war workers during World War II.

The events coincided with HMCS Kingston and HMCS Glace Bay’s visit to Port Oshawa. Fourteen DIL women and other women war workers met sponsors of the campaign at a pier side and on board ship’s reception, followed by a 1940’s themed dinner/dance at the Jubilee Pavilion, Lakeview Park, Oshawa.

Escorted by officers, sailors and veterans the honoured women were piped into the Jubilee Pavilion while the crowd gave a standing ovation. Louise Johnson, former DIL worker and Honourary Patron of the Campaign was the guest speaker.

Colleen Jordan, Chair Ajax Bomb Girls Legacy Campaign stated “a huge thank you goes out to all our sponsors and donors who have now pushed us above the $130,000 mark, bringing the vision of a monument closer and closer to reality. The contributions of these courageous, dedicated women will never be forgotten.”

bomb-girls-sailabration-2Plaques of the crests of HMCS Kingston and HMCS Glace Bay were presented to the host municipalities by Lieutenant Commander Paul Roddick, Commanding Officer, HMCS Kingston and Lieutenant Commander Kray Robichaud, Commanding Officer, HMCS Glace Bay. Regional Chair Anderson accepted on behalf of Durham Region, Mayor John Henry for Oshawa and Regional Councillor Colleen Jordan on behalf of the Town of Ajax.

During the day ship tours, military displays and children’s’ activities were some of the highlights as people visited Port Oshawa to view the ships.

Louise Johnson, Honourary Patron, Ajax Bomb Girls Legacy Campaign and former DIL worker captivated the audience with her talk about growing up in Saskatchewan and her experiences working at Defence Industries Limited, during WW11.  Margaret Yeomans, Committee member was on hand to assist and illustrate the uniforms worn by DIL employees
